EDUCATION

As we look at the world today, we see increasing reasons for concern.
Ideologies that were once fringe are making their way into mainstream life, informing government policy, and leading to hopelessness.
One of the core areas for concern is education. Are our children, were we, educated well enough?
Have we been educated in ways that allow us to think deeply, live well and be free? Or have we just memorised facts to pass exams, subscribed to notions of morality that fifty years ago would have seemed absurd, and succumbed to safety over freedom? Has our education passed us by? Or have we been transformed into positive and active citizens by the influence of great ideas?
Education is the bulwark against bad ideas, evil living, and the suppression of liberties.
As I write this, we are in the days following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. An assassination that came because he had the boldness to speak and dialogue with people he disagreed with. To confront ideas that made people uncomfortable or he disagreed with, but to challenge them gently, and to learn from their strengths.
Kirk was a man who, by his own admissions, dropped out of college to pursue his own path. But he was also clearly extremely educated. How did a college drop out become such a prominent voice in American politics with no degree or formal education? Because he read and learned.
From listening to Kirk it is clear that he read widely and deeply. He read classics, he read political, philosophical and historical documents, and he read modern works of deep significance.
What also came through in a lot of what he said was the three transcendentals: truth, goodness, and beauty.
It is on these three transcendentals that we are starting this organisation. Our aim is to educate in ways that are true, good, and beautiful.
The first aim of The Case For More is to encourage you to think deeply – this is our search for truth. We will consider big ideas, delving into them to see whether they are worthy or application to our own lives, or if they have flaws and need greater critique or scrutiny.
We will also consider how we can live well – this is goodness. Looking at the ethical codes and ideas that shaped laws of the past and present. Considering the stories of great people of history, thinking how we can embody what they did well, and learn from their mistakes.
And finally, we want to be free – this is beautiful. We want to educate ourselves in ways that allow us to recognise the forces of slavery and control, to learn from the past, and to secure a freer future for ourselves and subsequent generations. True beauty can only occur if we are free – free to create, build, imagine, and explore the world.
If you care about these things, I would encourage you to follow along as we learn more about the classical works and ideas that shaped not only the UK and America, nor just The West, but shaped the world. Works and ideas that are true, good, and beautiful.
We will be looking to ancient Greece and Rome. To the Bible and the theological traditions that it inspired. To the English poets and Scottish historians. French philosophers and German theologians. American political writes and Russian novelists.
In time, we will turn our eyes to the wider world, but to begin with, let’s remember, relearn, or learn for the first time, the ideas that built the UK and The West as it is today.
We have an exciting educational journey in front of us and I hope you will follow along for videos, resources and articles.
And always try to think deeply, live well, and be free.
